Srinagar: The President of People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Mehbooba Mufti, on Saturday expressed concerns over the recent actions of the Jammu and Kashmir administration and said these moves show that the Indian Supreme Court verdict regarding Article 370 is not compatible with the interests of Kashmiris.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Mehbooba Mufti talking to reporters in Islamabad district of occupied Jammu and Kashmir insisted that the court’s decision should unequivocally declare the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Indian government’s actions on August 5, 2019, to abrogate Article 370 as “illegal, unconstitutional,” and contrary to the interests of Jammu and Kashmir, as well as the commitments made to its people.
“Initially, the Supreme Court took an extended period, five years, to hear the cases. Moreover, its past rulings asserted that only the constituent Assembly of Jammu and Kashmir could annul Article 370. Therefore, the decision should be straightforward: what occurred on August 5, 2019, was illegal, unconstitutional, and against the interests of Jammu and Kashmir and its people,” she added.
The Indian Supreme Court is likely to announce on Monday its verdict on petitions challenging the abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution that gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir.
A five-member bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud had reserved the verdict in September on over 20 petitions challenging the Indian government’s decisions to revoke Jammu and Kashmir’s special status and split the territory into two Union Territories in 2019.
