BJP govt has released rapists of Bilqees but opposing bail to stone pelting accused in Godhra incident

New Delhi, December 03 (KMS): In the Indian State of Gujarat, the Hindutva government of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has released the convicts in the Bilqees Bano rape case but is opposing even the bail of those only accused of stone pelting in the Godhra train fire incident.

These accused have been detained in jail for almost 17 years while their bail application is pending in the Supreme Court of India since 2018. The BJP government has made it clear that it is not in a mood to give any concession to the accused in this incident.

The hearing of the bail plea of the accused in the 2002 Godhra incident was ongoing in the Indian Supreme Court. The Gujarat government opposed bail even though the court itself said that some of them are only accused of stone-pelting and have been in jail for a long time. The case was heard by a bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and PS Narasimha.

Hearing the petition of the accused, who have been in jail for almost 17 years, the court said the bail of the stone pelting accused can be considered but Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who was representing the Gujarat government, immediately opposed bail to the accused, saying that the character of the accused would be examined first.

Seeking respite from the court, he said that only after the investigation, an opinion can be given on the bail of the accused.

The court directed the Solicitor General to review the matter as soon as possible and submit his position.

The hearing of the case has been adjourned till December 15.

It is clear that the rapists were released because they were Hindus and the victim was a Muslim woman, while those arrested for stone pelting are Muslims, hence they are not being released on bail.

Discrimination against minorities, especially Muslims, is a daily routine in India and has seen a multifold increase since BJP came to power.
