Lahore, November 24 (KMS): US Senator Kesha Ram Hinsdale visited samadhi of her great grandfather Sir Ganga Ram, the architect of modern Lahore.
Kesha Ram prayed at her great-grandfather’s Samadhi located at Ravi Road.
She also visited Sir Ganga Ram’s house in Taxali, where Lahore Sangat placed a plaque, “Sir Ganga Ram, Civil Engineer, Philanthropist used to live here”.
Addressing a gathering on the occasion, Kesha Ram said that she was one of the first members of her family to visit the place in the last 75 years and hear about Sir Ganga Ram’s great works and incredible contributions and it means a lot to her family that his legacy doesn’t remain only in his projects but also in the hearts of the people. She praised the Evacuee Trust Property Board and its officials for keeping the residence of Sir Ganga Ram well maintained. She said that her family could not have imagined that how beautifully the samadhi of Sir Ganga Ram had been maintained.
On the other hand, Ms Kesha Ram Hinsdalealso called on the Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi at his office in Lahore along with her husband Jacob Croteau Hinsdale. On the occasion, the Chief Minister paid glowing tribute to Sir Ganga Ram for his invaluable services in the social sector and announced restoration and conversion of Gangaram’s residence in Taxali Gate into a museum.
Sir Ganga Ram, a distinguished engineer, and philanthropist is considered the father of modern Lahore for his huge contributions to the urban fabric of Lahore in the form of many landmark buildings that are treasures of architecture. He designed and built the General Post Office, Lahore Museum, Aitchison College, Mayo School of Arts (now NCA), Ganga Ram Hospital, Lady Mclagan Girls High School, the chemistry department of the Government College University, the Albert Victor wing of Mayo Hospital, the Hailey College of Commerce, Ravi Road House for the Disabled, the Ganga Ram Trust Building on The Mall and Lady Maynard Industrial School. He also constructed Model Town, once the best locality of Lahore, the powerhouse at Renala Khurd as well as the railway track between Pathankot and Amritsar. He built Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Lady Mclagan School and Renala Khurd Power House with his own money.
