Islamabad, September 22 (KMS): Mehmood Ahmed Saghar, Convener of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC-AJK) chapter in a letter to the UN Secretary General, Antonio Gutters, drew his attention towards the stepped up human rights violations in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
Saghar said, “The blood of innocent Kashmiris is being spilled over with impunity by the trigger-happy Indian forces. Life for the people living in the restive region is getting tougher and tougher with each passing day. Innocent Kashmiris in particular the educated youth are being killed ruthlessly by the Indian forces during fake encounters, cordons and search operations that go unabated.”
“Caught in a dangerously conflicting situation, innocent and unarmed Kashmiris have been bearing the brunt of intensifying violence and Indian state terrorism. Sadly, New Delhi has been remorselessly using violence as an official policy to punish Kashmiris who are demanding their legitimate right, the right to self-determination guaranteed to them through a dozen of resolutions the UN and UNSC have unanimously adopted on many occasions.” he wrote.
“The plight of Kashmiris has been immensely exacerbated after the Indian government led by Narendar Modi stripped the region of its decades’ long distinctive national, geographical and cultural identity, back in 2019.”
Having mentioned the lack of freedom of the press and expression in the IIOJK, Saghar said, “Coercion, intimidation and harassment of political activists, journalists, rights groups and civil society activists, have been a hallmark of the BJP government’s Kashmir policy.” The rights groups, the letter said, are being targeted for their work and cooperation with the UN and other international organizations in bringing out human rights violations being committed by the Indian troops in IIOJK.
The rest of the letter goes as:
“The continued and illegal detention of political activists that unfortunately goes unnoticed is a matter of serious concern. Thousands of Kashmiris including pro-freedom leaders, social activists, lawyers and businessmen who have been arrested before and after 5th August 2019 continue to rot in Indian jails.”
“Enactment of a series of anti-Kashmiri laws and reorganization of electoral constituencies by the Indian government has instilled a fear of insecurity amongst the Kashmiris. These laws fraught with serious political ramification are seen as a conspiracy to change the region’s demography and to deprive natives of their resources, jobs, identity, cultural, land and above all the right of self-determination guaranteed to them by no less an authority than the United Nations.”
“India’s antagonistic approach towards Kashmiris, military repression, demographic engineering, religious and cultural aggression against Kashmir is the biggest existential threat Kashmiris have ever faced.”
“It is high time that the world must take effective notice of the stepped-up human rights violations in the troubled region and influence the government of India to resolve the lingering dispute of Kashmir that happens to be the main cause and consequence of unrest and bloodshed in the region.”
At this point of time when the entire political leadership from across the globe have converged in New York to attend the UN General Assembly session, we appeal your highness to become a voice of voiceless Kashmiris and raise the issue of the Kashmir issue and human rights violations inflicted upon them (Kashmiris) by the Indian forces.”
“Your personal intervention in this regard can save many lives. We believe that no individual or state should be above the international laws. Those who are responsible for grave violations of human rights in Kashmir must be held accountable”, the letter concluded.
