Srinagar, August 11 (KMS): In Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, the Jammu and Kashmir Awami Action Committee (AAC) has expressed deep concern over the continued arbitrary house detention of its Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, since 5 August 2019.
The AAC in a statement issued in Srinagar said the continued house arrest of the Mirwaiz for more than three years is a cause of anxiety among the people of IIOJK, especially his lakhs of followers.
The AAC said that by detaining the Mirwaiz, it seems the authorities want to weaken the institution of Mirwaiz, which is indigenous to the culture and heritage of Jammu and Kashmir and a distinctive symbol of its Islamic ethos and identity. The institution has centuries-old glorious history of service and abetting the growth of the people and society of IIOJK, it added.
The AAC recalled the remarks of IIOJK’s Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to a private TV channel wherein he had said that “no leader in Jammu and Kashmir is under house arrest”. “If it is so, then why is Mirwaiz Umar Farooq still under house detention?” it asked.
The AAC urged the Indian authorities to take immediate steps to end the arbitrary detention of the Mirwaiz and restore his basic human rights and let the people of IIOJK hear him from the pulpit of Jamia Masjid, Srinagar, like before.
It also urged the authorities to release all political prisoners languishing in different jails of IIOJK and India.
