Srinagar, July 10 (KMS): In occupied Kashmir, the acting Chairperson of the so-called State Human Rights Commission (SHRC), Habibullah Butt has sought registration of a murder case against a Station House Officer (SHO), a police investigation officer and two police constables in a custodial killing case of 27 years old youth.

Showkat Ali, a resident of Rajouri was arrested by police from his home on February 13, 2007 on fakecharges. He was lodged in police station Rajouri where he collapsed after being subjected to severe torture by the police.

Acting on the petition filed by the family of the deceased, the Commission ordered an enquiry on February 19, 2007 with respect to the custodial death of Showkat.

The SHRC judgement reads, "The Commission is satisfied that Showkat had died in the custody of police.” It added that a case of murder should be registered against the police officials involved in the killing and they should be prosecuted for the custodial death. The Commission also recommended that Rs 2 lakh should be paid as compensation to next of kin of the deceased.
