Mirwaiz appeals EU to play role in Kashmir settlement

Continued detention of Hurriyet leaders denounced

Srinagar, November 24 (KMS): The APHC Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq briefed a European Union delegation, today, about the gross human rights violations by Indian troops in occupied Kashmir. The delegation comprising New Delhi based diplomats, Mr Olof Lindgren, Ms Daniele, Mr. Lon Dela Riva, Mr Jean M Debouller and Mr Oscar Schlyter, met the APHC Chairman in Srinagar.

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq urged the delegation that the European Union must play an effective and substantive role in resolving the Kashmir dispute. He said that it had become imperative for the peace and security of South Asia that Pakistan and India resumed their stalled dialogue process. The delegation assured the APHC Chairman that it would fulfil its responsibilities towards resolving the Kashmir dispute in accordance with the Kashmiris’ aspirations.

The Muslim League Jammu and Kashmir in a statement strongly condemned the continued illegal detention of the party leaders including Masarrat Alam Butt, Muhammad Yousuf Mir and Abdul Ahad Parra.

Prominent Kashmiri human rights activist, Muhammad Ahsan Untoo, led a sit-in at Pratap Park in Srinagar to draw world attention towards the miserable plight of the illegally detained Kashmiri Hurriyet activists.

The Executive Director of Kashmir Centre Washington, Dr Ghulam Nabi Fai in a statement, urged the US President, Barack Obama to impress upon Indian Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh during their meeting to resolve the Kashmir dispute. The Executive Director of Kashmir Centre London, Professor Nazir Ahmad Shawl, in his statement maintained that the human dimension of the Kashmir dispute should not be ignored. »
