Live shells in fields prevent villagers in IHK from farming

Srinagar, May 02 (KMS): In occupied Kashmir, while the farmers are busy in their fields these days, but those in Khundroo area of Islamabad district are caught between the devil and deep sea situation.

Since August last year after Indian Army’s ammunition depot caught fire at Khundroo, the area is witnessing till date small explosions from time to time.

The farmers are unsure whether or not they are safe while ploughing their land. They have apprehensions that they may lose more lives, as they believe more live shells are there. Recently a16-year-old boy, Ashiq Butt was injured as a live shell exploded when he was digging in field. The depot fire has claimed 21 lives, including a fireman and army men and around 50 people have got injured so far.

The villagers said that the area where Ashiq was injured was declared as cleared area. They maintained that the area has not been cleared and live shells are yet there. The villagers added that the clearance certificate of the area was only to show the media and outsiders,

One of the residents, Abdul Rashid of adjoining Phaloo village said, “We are not allowing our children to venture out as live shells are there in fields,” adding, “From time to time there are small explosions.”
