Srinagar, February 07 (KMS): In occupied Kashmir, scores of postgraduate students, mostly females, from different area of valley, who had to appear in examinations at the Kashmir University campus, were thrashed by the Indian police and paramilitary CRPF troopers on way to the varsity.
The students, especially females, could be seen stranded at several places waiting for vehicles to ferry them to the University as undeclared curfew and strict restriction crippled life across the Srinagar city.
“I left home at 8 am. My parents accompanied me up to Sangrama from where I boarded a cab and reached Qamarwari. There was no public transport. I hired a three-wheeler, but within no time was stopped by the CRPF troopers who started questioning me,” said an M Sc Zoology girl student from Sopore. “I was scared and told him that I have to appear in exams. He used very bad language, abused me and slapped the driver,” she added.
What added to the problems of the students was the closure of the roads after the Friday’s killing of a teenager, Zahid Farooq, by paramilitary BSF personnel. Examinations, scheduled for Saturday, included that of Faculties of Law, Zoology, Botany, Environmental Science and various other streams.
“CRPF troopers and policemen checked my I-card at least 15 times until I reached Baba Demb from Nowgam on foot. But from there I was beaten twice up to Khanyar where I decided not to move ahead,” said Tanseem Alam, pursuing M Sc Botany from the KU.
