Indian civil rights activists seek Afzal Guru's release

Mumbai, May 21 (KMS): Several Indian civil liberties and democratic rights organizations have sought immediate release of Mohammed Afzal Guru who has been falsely implicated in the Indian parliament attack case on December 13, 2001and awarded capital punishment.

A resolution in this connection was passed at the conference of civil liberties and democratic rights organisations held in Mumbai on May 18. They have unanimously appealed to the union government to immediately release Mohammed Afzal Guru.

The civil liberties and democratic rights organizations said that the evidence against Mohammed Afzal Guru was weak but Indian courts had found it fit to convict him and to award him capital punishment and added that the Government of India had acquiesced to the sentence passed. “Probably the Indian government is waiting for an opportune time to hang him to death as was done in the case of Maqbool Butt in 1984,” says the press release of these organisations.
