Family members seek whereabouts of a Kashmiri youth

Srinagar April 12 (KMS): The parents of an arrested youth fear that police the might have killed their son in custody.

The youth Muhammad Rafi was arrested by police on July 22, 2006 on fake charges of abetting the attack on Congress rally on May 21 2006.

Days after Rafi’s arrest, his father Ghulam Muhammad Sheikh was allowed to meet him at various city police stations.  It was early October that a senior police official at Kothi Bagh Police station in Srinagar told Rafi’s father that their son had been shifted to Kot Bhalwal jail in Jammu where the police declared that he fled from the Police vehicle.

Rafi’s mother, Zaina Begum said that had her son escaped from the custody he would have definitely got in touch with the family, adding, “He has not escaped, but the police has killed him in custody.”

Besides lodging a report in Police station, Zaina Begum has also filed a petition in the High Court seeking its intervention into the disappearance of her son from the Kot Bhalwal Jail. But her every attempt, she said, has proved futile. “If they have martyred him, I will be the proud mother to accept it, but if he is still alive, let them take me there to see him,” she added.
