New York, August 27 (KMS): The New York based, Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has condemned restrictions on media imposed by occupation authorities in occupied Kashmir.
CPJ Asia Programme Co-ordinator Bob Dietz asked the authorities to protect journalists covering the present unrest in the occupied territory, adding, “News about the conflict should be broadcast without restrictions on media outlets or reporters in the field.”
Asian Age reporter, Yusuf Jameel, told the CPJ that no newspapers were published in Srinagar on Tuesday due to curfew. He maintained that they were not allowed to move freely despite carrying the passes issued by the authorities.
According to international news reports, the Central Reserve Police Force beat up at least 13 journalists for reporting on Sunday, during a strict curfew imposed indefinitely on major towns of the territory to restrain anti-India protesters. Local authorities also banned all news programmes on local TV channels, according to news reports.
Jameel said at least one of the journalists injured on Sunday, Bilal Butt, was still being treated for a rib fracture at a hospital in Srinagar. He added that many Kashmiri residents were relying on cable broadcasts and international radio stations for information regarding the present situation of the territory.
