Arrests, demos, clashes mark HR day in IHK

Mirwaiz, Shah, Nayeem placed under house arrest

Srinagar, December 10 (KMS): In occupied Kashmir, the International Human Rights Day, today, was marked with mass level arrests, anti-India protests and clashes between Indian police and demonstrators.

The occupation authorities had placed the APHC Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and other leaders including Shabbir Ahmad Shah and Nayeem Ahmad Khan under house arrest.

The action was taken to thwart a procession, which APHC had to organise from its headquarters from Rajbagh to Municipal Park in Srinagar.

Indian police raided the APHC office and arrested eight Hurriyet leaders. A large number of activists of Awami Majlis-e-Amal were arrested at Dalgate on their way to Rajbagh. Agha Syed Hassan Al-Moosvi was prevented along with his supporters in Badgam to proceed to Srinagar. APHC leader; Mukhtar Ahmad Waza was arrested while leading a march towards Lal Chowk. Yasmeen Raja, Javed Ahmad Mir and Mohammad Ahsan Untoo were lodged in different police stations.

The APHC Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq described the action by the authorities as indicative of their frustration.

The Bar Association of the occupied territory held a seminar in Srinagar, which was addressed among others by Mian Abdul Qayoom, Ghulam Nabi Shaheen and Professor Hamida Nayeem. They appealed to the international community to help Kashmiris secure their right to self-determination.

Relatives of the disappeared persons staged a sit-in at Partap Park in Srinagar. People took to streets in the interior localities of Srinagar with anti-India slogans and clashes were witnessed between the protestors and the Indian police personnel.  Complete strike was observed in Shopian town.

The Jammu and Kashmir Joint Association of Kashmiri Affected Families in a statement in Srinagar condemned restrictions by Indian authorities to thwart pro-liberation demonstrations in the occupied territory.

Speakers addressing a function organised by the APHC AJK in Islamabad said that the gross human rights violations by Indian troops in occupied Kashmir had made the territory one of the dangerous spots of the world. The function was presided over by Syed Faiz Naqshbandi.
