In occupied Kashmir, the new coalition government of pro-India Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and rightwing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is nothing but convergence of unethical and unholy interests though both pose to have different concepts about Jammu and Kashmir. Even the new puppet Chief Minister, Mufti Muhammad Sayeed, described the coalition as the meeting of North Pole and South Pole. Before announcement of the puppet government, both the parties tried to mislead the Kashmiri people in the name of talks to reach an agreement they called Common Minimum Programme. However, the fact of the matter is that it was all pre-planned and a drama to garner sympathies of the Kashmiris, who never wanted to see BJP in power in the territory.

There is no denying the fact that both the parties have never been the well-wishers of the people of Jammu and Kashmir and they have joined hands only to further the nefarious communal and divisive agenda of Sangh Parivar – an amalgam of extremist Hindu organisations like BJP, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, Bajrang Dal, Shiv Sena and Vishva Hindu Parishad. While India’s ruling party BJP and Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, are notorious for their anti-Muslim activities, Mufti Sayeed had always been known for his anti-Kashmiri actions.

The BJP and Narendra Modi during general elections and after coming to power in 2014 made some announcements and took such decisions regarding Kashmir that created resentment among the Kashmiris. They announced to ensure complete merger of Jammu and Kashmir with India by holding debate for the abrogation of the Article 370 of Indian Constitution that gives special status to the territory, asked the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan to vacate its office in Delhi and suspended Foreign Secretary-level talks with Pakistan on the pretext of meetings in New Delhi between Pakistani High Commissioner, Abdul Basit, and Kashmiri Hurriyet leaders.

It is a reality that Mufti Sayeed has always betrayed the Kashmiris. After becoming the Union Home Minister of India in 1989, he deputed Jagmohan Malhotra as the Governor of Kashmir to suppress the Kashmiris’ aspirations when they intensified their struggle for securing their right to self-determination. The occupied territory witnessed the worst incidents of its history like massacres of Gaw Kadal and Handwara by Indian troops during the tenure of Malhotra. Mufti Sayeed imposed in occupied Kashmir the draconian law, Armed Forces Special Powers Act, which grants unbridled powers to Indian forces’ personnel to commit gross human rights violations with impunity in the territory. During the PDP-Congress rule in 2008, he allowed the transfer of Kashmiris’ land to Hindu Shrine Board that led to mass agitation in the territory, resulting in the killing of scores of youth at the hands of occupation troops. He is even using as his official residence since years Srinagar’s infamous torture centre, PAPA-II, where thousands of Kashmiris were butchered.

Ironically, now Mufti Sayeed is trying to mislead the Kashmiris and exploit their sentiments by talking about securing the continuation of the Article 370 and repeal of AFSPA. However, the fact is that his decision of forging an alliance with BJP has even exposed his own claim of self-rule and showed that he is only power hungry and can go to any extent to achieve this objective. The Kashmiris had not given him the mandate to share power with BJP but to keep this party at bay. Mufti Sayeed and his party will have to face the consequences of this decision in the future.
