The veteran Kashmiri Hurriyet leader, Syed Ali Gilani, while felicitating the people of Pakistan for holding successful elections in the country has expressed the confidence that Pakistan will use all its channels to build pressure on India to resolve the Kashmir dispute by implementing the UN resolutions that guaranteed right to self-determination for the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Syed Ali Gilani in a media interview in Srinagar said that the entire international community acknowledged that the Jammu and Kashmir was a disputed territory. He said that the UN resolutions provided the best solution to the lingering dispute, therefore, the world community should use its influence and take practical steps for the implementation of these resolutions.

Reports emanating from Indian occupied Kashmir indicate that the people of Kashmir are happy with the continuation of the democratic process in Pakistan. They hope that this development will strengthen democracy and ensure stability in the country.

At the same time, it is a historic fact that Pakistan has always advocated settlement of the conflict over Kashmir in accordance with the Kashmiris’ inalienable right to self-determination as promised by India and the international community. Pakistan is continuing its unwavering support to the Kashmir cause for the last over sixty-five years and using every channel to highlight the Kashmir dispute at the global level.

The UN resolutions are of enormous importance as they recognize the disputed nature of Jammu and Kashmir. They also maintain that the Kashmiri people will be given an opportunity to decide their future by themselves through the democratic process of exercising their right to self-determination. However, New Delhi has not fulfilled the commitments made by its leaders over six decades ago and continues its illegal hold on Kashmir at the dint of military might. Unfortunately, the UN has failed to implement its resolutions as it has done in the case of other international disputes like East Timor, Kosovo and South Sudan.
